Changing places solutions
Uttoxeter Road
Assisted by KingKraft and ROPOX, Burton University Hospitals has installed their first Changing Places facility incorporating several ROPOX solutions: SlimLine washbasin, Toilet Lifter, Shower/Changing Bed and a GH3 Hoist from Guldmann.
The challenge: Creating an accessible changing place for everyone
When Burton University Hospital planned its first Changing Places facility, the ambition was to create a bathroom that could be used safely and comfortably by people with complex disabilities and high support needs.
The hospital wanted a solution that met the official Changing Places specification while providing a welcoming and comfortable environment for patients, visitors and their carers. At the same time, the equipment needed to support different mobility needs, be easy to use and offer good value for money.
The strategy: Combining accessibility and comfort
Creating a successful Changing Places facility required more than installing the necessary equipment. Every element of the room was carefully selected to ensure that users could maintain as much independence as possible while providing carers with a safe and ergonomic working environment.
By combining height-adjustable solutions with ceiling hoist technology, the hospital created a flexible bathroom that can be adapted to a wide range of users without compromising comfort or accessibility.

The solution: Height-adjustable bathroom solutions
The completed Changing Places facility includes several ROPOX height-adjustable solutions alongside a ceiling hoist from Guldmann.
The bathroom is equipped with a ROPOX SlimLine washbasin that combines a height-adjustable washbasin and mirror in one unit. As both move together, the mirror is always positioned at a comfortable height whether the user is standing or seated.
To support independent toilet use, the room also features a ROPOX Toilet Lifter with support arms. The lift gently lowers and raises the user, making toilet transfers safer while preserving dignity and reducing physical strain.

A height-adjustable ROPOX Shower Changing Bed provides a comfortable and hygienic solution for personal care. The bed can be adjusted from 30 to 100 cm to create an ergonomic working height for carers and folds neatly against the wall when not in use to maximise floor space.
To complete the facility, the hospital installed a Guldmann GH3 ceiling hoist with room-covering rails, enabling safe transfers throughout the bathroom while accommodating users weighing up to 200 kg.

The result: Positive feedback from users and carers
The new Changing Places facility has received very positive feedback from users and their families. According to Burton University Hospital, people appreciate both the ease of use and the generous space, which allows wheelchair users and carers to move around comfortably.
“The feedback we received was fantastic with many people commenting on how easy all the equipment is to use and how much room there was for wheelchair users and their carer or family member who may be assisting them”. – says Chris Maddox, Community & Corporate Partnerships Manager.

The completed facility provides a safe, hygienic and accessible environment where people with limited mobility can use the bathroom with greater dignity, comfort and independence while giving carers the support they need to provide safe assistance.
