Glasgow Science Centre increase Changing Places capacity

Glasgow Science Centre has recently completed the installation of a sixth accessible toilet facility with the help of Ropox, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and installers of accessible bathroom and kitchen solutions. In another sign of its commitment to being as accessible as possible, the centre has also been registered as an official Changing Places site which means people wishing to use one of the accessible toilets do not have to be a centre visitor.

“As we normally attract visitors from all over the UK and overseas, it is imperative that we can cater for people with all levels of mobility and independence and tapping into the knowledge and experience of companies such as Ropox certainly helps us achieve this” commented from Gerry McCann, Customer Service Manager.

The latest changing unit comprises of a Ropox StandardLine wash basin which is complimented by an overhead hoist, specialist toilet, emergency alarm, shower trolley and a controlled access door.

“Whenever we are making changes at the centre, we gather feedback from visitors to ensure we are going to meet their expectations and this is even more vital with our accessible toilet facilities as we want to make their time at the centre as stress free as possible.  Once we had this feedback, we spoke to various manufacturers including Ropox and assessed their products before going ahead” continued Gerry.

The Ropox StandardLine wash basin is equally at home in a commercial, domestic or care environment.  With a height adjustment of 70 cm to 100 cm, the basin has been designed to incorporate enough legroom for wheelchair users to comfortably access the basin in comfort.  The user or their carer can easily adjust the height of the basin at the touch of an easy-to-use button which is integrated into the top of the basin and there is also a remote-control option available.

Glasgow Science Centre prides itself on its accessibility.  In addition to the six accessible toilet units, there is comprehensive disabled parking and extensive wheelchair access throughout.  Wheelchairs are available to visitors should they require them and during busy times visitors with Autism do not have to queue as long as staff are aware of their requirements.  The centre also recognises the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme and accepts The Access Card that allows staff to support disabled visitors throughout their visit. Induction Loops are available for visitors with impaired hearing and they can also download the free Glasgow Science Centre BSL app that includes BSL (British Sign Language) explanations of some of the most popular exhibits.
